[02 & 3)Surface Model, Unfold + Laser-Ready Template

Blog Posts 2 and 3 combined... I resolved the issue I mentioned in my last blog post by disabling the Auto C Plane option, which stopped the C plane from moving. During my experiments with the paper, I didn't generate many ideas, and unfortunately, I forgot to photograph the prototype. But I chose not to pursue it anyway. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ At a later date, I noticed that the bow tower has interesting triangular glass panels above the entrance doors. I thought I could create something similar, but it seemed too simple. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ While I was brainstorming ideas, I came up with a Toblerone shape, probably because I was feeling quite hungry at the time. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I liked the bite mark idea proposed by Bryan. I think it makes it cuter, more challenging and more distinctly a Toblerone, while also saving on materials. I think the colour of the copper fits as well, as its similar to chocolate. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After seeing multiple ways to create it, as demonstrated by Bryan it was fairly easy to make. I tried my best to keep things as organized as possible and save every step of the process. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I bought a Toblerone and measured all the angles and lengths, which was difficult because it kept melting. I took a bite, but it didn’t create a very nice bite mark. The impression is so small that it just kind of melts and doesn’t leave distinct teeth impressions. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Here is my modelling in Rhino:
The Lasercut template:
Lasercut prototype:
I'm generally pleased with the outcome, but there was a mysterious piece that fell off, which doesn’t seem to fit anywhere, so it must be something I accidentally left in my file. As many pointed out, it was difficult to assemble because the material is quite thick, and it doesn’t behave like copper; instead, it breaks at the bend point, whereas copper would bend more gradually and retain its shape. The middle section has trouble fitting into my prototype, and I hope I don’t encounter the same issue with the copper. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Moving forward, I will add the straight part at the bottom that I forgot. I will also include an additional section, as someone in class suggested that it would make the piece more recognizable. This means I will have two whole sections and one with the bite mark. Additionally, I will scale the design down to match the size of a real Toblerone. I thought I had already sized it correctly, so I'm not sure what went wrong there. For the bite mark, I want to adjust its placement slightly and avoid the very straight line that I had not noticed before.
